The new logo

Well, I hoped to have every new thing released at the exact same moment but my web master, aka husband, tells me it's not that easy. So my site is going to be down for a few days. I hope it won't be for very long. This is what you'll find if you go to jhintze.com.

I finally have a logo of sorts. It's basically just the business name in a cool letter arrangement or whatever. But anyway, I like it. It's friendly and it makes me happy. It's certainly better than just typing everything business related in the "skia" font for uniformity.

So, what do you think? I'm not changing it so you might as well like it. I made the mistake one night of asking Jackson's input. He was just wanting me to change all kind of stuff around for no good reason at all. I told him to go to bed.

A little wacky

Things around my website might get a little wacky over the next few days as we begin to move to the new site. The address will be the same so you may see some kind of under construction type thing happening. We will bust it to get the new site up ASAP. Please be patient with us. Once we get everything up, I will post here for one last time and then we're on to the new blog. Thanks.

Countdown to the new J.Hintze Photography website and blog. That means this blog won't be the one you're interested anymore. I'm *hoping* to have all the new stuff ready to go in a week. That might be a little too ambitious so we'll have to see how it goes. I'm so excited to have the new site up and running. It's going to be much better and more colorful and just all together cooler. Family Vacation at Galveston Beach

I met a family in Galveston this morning for some pictures. It was very bright and very hot! Even at 8:30 in the morning. We were all pretty sweaty after about 15 minutes. The kids were real troopers. I love this first picture of Mallory. She turned out to be quite a ham once we got out of the sun. I played around with some different finishes and textures on some of these. Any little experimental things are offered in addition to the regular color and b&w prints, BTW.

Chubby Legs Kendall

I had a shoot this morning with Kendall. I did her pictures back in March and she has certainly changed a lot since then. The mosquitos were beyond horrible today. And it just so happens that I chose a couple of locations with high grass and I think mosquitos love high grass. Kendall and her parents stuck it out though and I think we got some great pictures. I've hardly been able to peel myself away from the computer since I walked in the house. I'm actually still wearing my filthy clothes from the shoot. I need a shower!

Anyway, here are some pictures of Kendall. I have probably gone a bit overboard with the number of pictures on this post. Oh well. I think the first one is my favorite from today. And I can't prove it, but I think Kendall might be among the top ten most beautiful babies on the planet. And certainly one of the chubbiest.

P.S. Kendall, I won't tell Mrs. Cyndi that you tee-teed on her mirror. It will be out little secret. ;-)

I got a new cool FREE chair today thanks to freecycle and a friend from church. I figured the chair search would take much longer than it did. The search was only going on for about a week or so. Thanks, Jennifer. Your ex-chair will be put to good use. I was very eager to get her out and let her stretch her legs and pose for some pictures. She obliged. I took my favorite male model out with me.

Jackson agreed to model for me under the following conditions: (Jackson always has conditions.)

1. He needed to be paid a fee of $5.00 for his time and cuteness. He really wanted the money up front but settled for after the fact. He didn't make me sign anything, thankfully.

2. He needed to be able to bring his sword.

3. I had to take a picture of him with his sword.

4. I must post the aforementioned sword picture online for everyone to see.

5. I had to replace the gum I made him spit out during the chair shoot.

I think that's it. He thought the whole thing was really fun. Just to be able to jump in a nice chair outside on a gravel road is kind of a new experience for most kids. After we did a few with the shirt on, I asked him if we could take a few without the shirt. And he said, "I guess. I don't know why we're doing this. It's probably against the law." I told him that I seriously doubt trespassing on private property, taking off your clothes, and taking pictures is illegal. Good grief, that child. Whose kid is he anyway?

I had a lot of fun taking and editing these pictures. Since this is my kid, I was able to do some serious Photoshop experimentation. Some of the editing is a little over the top but I like it. Now, I would like to introduce you to my new cool FREE chair.

I've been playing around with some different finishes. I really like this one a lot.

In other news, I've been on the lookout for a cool chair that I can use. I may have found one. For FREE!! Well, I haven't gone and looked at it yet, but it sounds like it might be a good one to use for some pictures. So if it looks like what I have in mind, I'll be using it on Friday for some chubby baby pictures.

Problem #1: Where will I put the chair in my house?

Problem #2: How will I get the chair from my house to a shoot?

Oh, I'll worry about that after I bring the chair home. One thing at a time, right?

It's 1:30 in the morning. I should not be up doing this stuff but at least the kids aren't interrupting me. I have ordered 48 of these advertising post cards. In a few days they will be strategically placed around the City of Lake Jackson. So I hope some of you find them and use them. And if any of my photo competitors find them and throw them away, shame on you. That's all I have to say to you. Shame, shame, shame.

If anyone has any suggestions of places I can put these, e-mail me and tell me. Don't post it on the blog. That wouldn't be smart. It's like a hide and go seek game. I'll hide, you seek.

A few more of Emma's family

I thought I would post a few more pictures from yesterday on here. I don't have anything better to be doing right now other than playing around on facebook. (BTW, if you want to friend me on facebook you can search for jhintze@jhintze.com. I'll send you some flair!)

Anyway, I've been playing with some muted color techniques in photoshop. The one of the girls reading the book is muted by layering a regular color, a sepia, and a b&w and adjusting them and overlaying them until it looks like I want it to. I think it looks kind of cool. I won't get rid of the regular color pictures but I'll probably offer a couple of muted along with a couple of sepia per shoot.

And just F.Y.I., my son, Jackson, wants to marry Emma. They were in the same kindergarten class. I showed him some of these pictures of her and he asked me if I could print one out for him. If Emma's mom doesn't mind I might have to get him a 4X6 to frame and put on his shelf. Funny.

A Beautiful New Family

These wonderful people are coming together as an official family next Saturday. Mom and Dad are getting married and these two little ones are going to be new sisters. It's so exciting and they look so great together. And these parents win the coveted "Most Relaxed Parent" Award for letting me give these girls lollipops in their white dresses. And they didn't even freak out when the little one got some on her dress. I think it was worth it, but I don't have to get out the stain. Congratulations, guys. Emma, you're going to be a great big sister!

Why I'm doing this thing called Photography

I know you're here to look at my pictures. And you may or may not care about my thoughts on things. But since I am somewhat of a writer too, you may occasionally be subject to not only my pictures, but also what's going on in my life or in my head. I think more than being an occasional writer or a photographer, I'm more of a documenter of sorts.

And so that's why I do this photography thing. To document. Because I feel satisfied with knowing that that look was captured for all time. That glimpse or that smirk or that kiss won't ever be entirely lost. I'm not in this to know the right lingo or win contests or attach any kind of fame to my name. I'm not in this to have the latest and coolest and most expensive gear. Not that there's anything wrong with that stuff. But that stuff can't be the why for me. And so that's why I'm writing this down. That's why I'm documenting how I feel right now, today. Because people change and their motivations change and their hearts change. And if someday that stuff becomes the why, I want to be able to go back to this point and read this and remember the real reason why I want to do this. I want to do this because people are important and people are eternal. The documented moment of that person is why I want to this thing called photography.

I'm pretty new to the photography biz. I'm still naive, green, unscathed so to speak. And I hope I'm able to hang on to that for a while. I'm somewhat jaded about many other things. I sincerely hope that I don't become jaded about this. I'm scared of becoming formulaic and stale in my approach. And I hope that I'm able to recognize it in myself if it happens. I hope I'm able to turn it around. I hope I'm able to recapture the why if I ever forget. And I hope those of you who really know me will be able to help me remember.

July 4th Fireworks

We went to a friend's house the other night to watch the fireworks. This is my first experience with trying to photograph fireworks. And this is also really my first time to try to take pictures of stuff at night. I'm pretty happy with how they turned out. Maybe I'll stop taking pictures of kids and families and just concentrate on fireworks. There's a huge market for that, right? I could make money at that, couldn't I?

Mock studio shots

I don't have a studio. Let's just get that out of the way in case you were wondering. And I don't have any kind of studio lighting or backdrops. I shoot outside or in people's homes. A lot of times I've never been in that place before so I have to think a little to make it work. Generally speaking, I'm not a huge fan of traditional looking studio stuff. A lot of it's just a little too Life Touch or Olan Mills for me. Sometimes I think it would be cool to have a studio but it just kind of seems a little stuffy or something. Plus there's the whole studios are expensive issue. Anyway, here are a couple of pictures that look like they might have been done in a studio but they were actually done in this couple's bedroom. I'm pretty pleased with how they turned out. I think I might invest in a black backdrop thing in the somewhat near future. What's behind them is actually their curtain, which I desaturated and darkened. And I know I've posted a lot of pictures of this particular family but I love babies. Have I said that already?

I was messing around with the camera and took this of my husband playing guitar. I took it at a high ISO on purpose and it was really grainy. I dirtied it up a lot more and I really like the end result. From cute babies to messy guitar pictures. My oh my, check out my versatility! Wow, that sounds really arrogant. Cousins

These five kids are all visiting their grandparents for a few days. Every year they try to get some pictures of them all together. And it's not an easy thing to do. When one would sit down another one would stand up. It's like that game whack-a-mole. Three of these five have been on my blog before. Jaci and Cody are a couple of new faces.

The first picture cracks me up. That little monkey child was sitting on my foot with his legs wrapped around my leg and I was walking around like that for a little while taking pictures of him below. The kid just met me and was my new best friend.

Between family illnesses and end of school parties, I've gotten a little behind with my blogging. I photographed this family a week ago Saturday. These guys are friends from church and she is a local photographer. It's kind of hard for a photographer to get family pictures with herself (or himself) in them. Colton, the little guy, was very happy and cooperative most of the time. In the b&w where he looks pouty, it is all an act. I told him I wanted him to look mad. Pretty good little actor for an almost five year old.

I met a family at Surfside yesterday evening for some pictures. It was a pretty large group so I'm posting a lot of pictures. Usually I just pick a few favorites. Occasionally parents like to "warn" me about their child or children. They want me to be prepared for a potential hard headed or uncooperative child. And I usually think "you got nothing on me, honey." I've yet to encounter a child that's more difficult to photograph than my own son. He runs away, covers his face, falls down, sticks out his tongue....etc. Here are a few of our 16 month old, Mikey. And look, he's actually smiling in the last one. Who knew?!

Color POP!

Sometimes you might want a photograph that's just a little different. Something that will make people stop and say, "Oh, that's cool!" The two pictures below feature what's called a color pop. Most of the picture is black and white except for one color or item that is in color. If you are interested in having a color pop done on any of your photographs, just let me know.

There's a minimal color pop fee for my time.

Happy Belated Mother's Day!

These lovely ladies decided to treat themselves to some pictures for Mother's Day. I can't think of a better gift! Here are a few from their shoot. I love the pictures of the little 3 year old, Aaralyn. In the first picture, the b&w, she wasn't into the whole picture taking thing. But in the second one, she had just been bribed with some gum. What a difference! Now I know that I need to keep gum and/or candy on me at all times when I'm photographing children.

So Happy Belated Mother's Day to all you mommies out there. Isn't being a mom like the coolest thing ever? I think so.

Retouching

I wanted to take a few minutes and post a retouching before and after. This is my pal, Kace. Kace started getting a little restless during our shoot and needed to stop for a cookie break. And since he's two, he's not the cleanest cookie eater on the planet.

Once he was done we continued to take a few more pictures before cleaning his face. The before is pretty much straight from my camera with only minor level adjustments. Aside from the obvious brightening of the photograph and saturation boosting, there are a few other things going on here. You can see from the first picture that there is some cookie slime below his mouth and also an unpleasant shadow. You can also see a couple of little red dots, probably old mosquito bites on his face. In the after his mouth is cleaned up and the dots are gone. I also sharpened and brightened his eyes a little.

This is an example of some standard retouching that I do to every photograph. I clean up skin blemishes, reduce lines and wrinkles, smooth skin, whiten teeth, and brighten eyes for all client photos. I do it all in a natural way so you still look like you just maybe a little fresher. I've even cleaned up some yucky toddler noses....just think of it as digital kleenex. All of my digital editing is done with Adobe Photoshop CS3.

So if you're planning on doing senior pictures and you've got a nasty zit that you just can't get rid of, don't give it another thought. It won't be there in your pictures.

Upcoming changes in June

Please take note that as of June 2008 I will no longer be including 4X6 proofs with the $65 session fee. Each client will have 30 day access to a private online gallery with color and b&w proofs from their session. A proof book of 4X6 color only prints can be purchased for an additional $25.

I know this may come as a disappointment to some people. But I have discovered that it's very difficult for families to order their pictures when they're trying to pass around one book for everyone to take a look at. With online viewing Grandma in Oklahoma can decide what pictures she wants before the family reunion 3 months from now. Make sense?

So the question might be, "Why not lower your session fee since you're not including proofs?" Good question my astute fellow learner. The reason for that is because there is time involved on my part and on the part of my webmaster (aka husband) to get the online gallery ready for client viewing.

So if you really want a color and b&w proof book (30-40 prints) included with your fee, you'll need to get on my calendar for May. No pressure, right?

Also, very soon I will have the ability to accept online payments for session fees and print costs. Ordering will still be done through me instead of an outside source so I can offer discounts for package purchases.

I have this ability to be able to remember the name of almost any kid I meet. I don't remember most adults' names but kids' names just stick for some reason. It came in really handy when I taught preschool music to about 90 + kids. Anyway, that said, this is a picture of Gavin and his mommy. I'm sure his mom told me her name but I just have no idea what it is. Sorry. This is another one from the wedding weekend. He is a cutie.

Senior Announcements

I am now offering Senior Announcements. I can't take credit for designing these. I can only take credit for taking the pictures. I purchased these editable PSD templates today from l ch Photography Design. They're pretty cool. Since this is my first year to do senior pictures, I haven't been swamped with seniors. I expect the 2009 graduates to keep me busy. Here are a few examples of the announcements I purchased. I really like the designs that these people produce. I'm sure I'll be buying lots more stuff from them in the future.

Congratulations Morgan and Jessica!!

On Saturday I had the privilege of photographing a wedding. It was a really long, fun, nerve-racking, and memorable day. Phillip and I left our house at 7:00 a.m. and got back home at 11:20 p.m. I think I held the camera for about 7 hours straight....and that thing is heavy. It was a lot of fun. The couple and the family members were so down to earth and hospitable.

Here a few highlights from that day. Of course most of my favorites have kids in them. I guess that makes sense.

Those beautiful kids I posted previously also have some pretty cute parents and a dog...actually two dogs but one wasn't in the mood for pictures. So, here are a couple more. I really like the one of everybody. I just love the feet all over the place.

On a completely unrelated side note, I'm doing my first "real" wedding tomorrow. And I'm really excited about it. So, check back Sunday or Monday for some wedding shots.

We finally have an adoption date for our youngest son. On April 7th @ 9:00 a.m., he will officially be Micah Benjamin Hintze. We are so excited. Then I won't have to only post pictures of him running away, which he does quite well by the way. He's got quite a beautiful little face and I can't wait to share it with the world.

Once our youngest is officially adopted in April you'll be seeing a lot more of him on this blog. I'm not supposed to post pictures of him online until he's adopted. That's been quite a challenge and I've tried to get away with posting a few here and there that don't show his face.
